Being good at what you do is not enough.
Many of us are more comfortable achieving competence than connectedness.
But competence alone is insufficient.
Getting connected with people in the know is a necessary secret to success in most organisations.
You need to have connections with people who receive insider information.
You can’t read the tea leaves if they won’t even invite you to tea.
The first important step is to become connected to at least one person who seems to know how your company works.
Find a reason to talk with this person.
Don’t waste their time though.
Ask questions that help with projects you’re working on.
Perhaps you have a skill that this person needs.
Why not offer to help with an important project?
Talk or write to an important person once a day.
This is as important as the work you do.
